The Spoken Word was made Flesh

Refutation of an Interpretation of a common belief

There is an old  saying that we are all familiar with that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Well that same thing stands true with people, you can present the facts to a person, but you can’t make them believe. The reason for this is usually people have been indoctrinated, brain washed if you will with certain beliefs that they believe are the truth and sometimes stubbornly they refuse to accept something different.

If you are reading this and are one of those persons, I probably don’t stand a chance to get you to consider something different from what you have been led to believe. By the same token, if you are a person that has been led to believe that the bible is the inerrant, factual and complete word of God, then what I will present to you will probably be in vain also.

Even though, it is imperative that I try, so here goes.

In the first chapter of the Gospel of John, the interpretation of the first 14 verses has caused a false belief to exist that has contradicted the truth of the identity of Jesus which has been stated throughout the bible. Many have read these verses and concluded that the person who wrote this gospel believed that Jesus was actually God in the flesh. Many times in this fourth gospel it clearly states that Jesus is the Son of God and not God Himself. In this writers own words, in Chapter 20, verse 31, the author of this book says and I quote: “But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you might have life through his name”. The person who wrote this book did not say in Chapter 1, verses 1 thru 14 that Jesus was God. This belief that has been accepted by many persons because of someone’s private interpretation of these verses.

Allow me to quote these verses here for your convenience.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2  The same was in the beginning with God. 3  All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. 4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5  And the light shined in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6  There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7  The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9  That was the true Light, which lights every man that comes into the world. 10  He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11  He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12  But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Just look at John 10:36 where it states in Jesus’ own words that he said “I am the Son of God”. Why can’t some of you people believe when Jesus tells you who he is? Why do some of you people make him out to be a liar? I’ll tell you what I believe, some of you are just without understanding. You are just too stubborn and hard headed to believe the truth and set yourselves free from the false doctrines you have become a slave to.

If you would just open your eyes to what this is really saying and believe that when it says “Word” or “logos” it is speaking of the spoken word of God and not the man Jesus.

This belief probably started because of the misunderstanding of the meaning of the first six words of the 14th verse, saying “ and the word was made flesh”. Well I do agree that the spoken word of God gave life to that which was in Mary and a flesh man was born by the name of Jesus.

Take one thing in consideration. The actual identity of the person who wrote this is unknown. There is no real proof in this book of John that identifies the author as John, any other Apostle, as Jesus or that these are the words of God.

Why should we accept the testimony of an anonymous person to lead us to believe that Jesus is the Word, or that Jesus is God when the author of this book testifies in his own writing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?
