The Name of God

God has only one name. God said to Moses, as is recorded in Exodus 6:3, my name is Jehovah. The name Jehovah is the English translation of the Hebrew name of God which is Yehovah that was developed from the original tetragrammaton, meaning four letters which was YHWH. These four letters were pronounced Yahweh.

Now in the event that explanation was a bit confusing, let us start from the beginning and explain the transition of God’s name to this day. In the original Hebrew writing God’s name was written as YHWH, which was pronounced as Yahweh. Later Hebrew writings used the name Yehovah as God’s name and was later translated into English as Jehovah.

When the bible was translated into English, the translators, for whatever reason, translated Yehovah into the word LORD using all caps to indicate that LORD was God’s name. They did this throughout the Old Testament except in four places. Those four places were Exodus 6:3, Psalms 83:18, Isaiah 12:2 and Isaiah 26:4.

The translators correctly translated God’s name as Jehovah in Exodus 6:3 and in Psalms 83:18, but in Isaiah 12:2 and Isaiah 26:4 it would have been confusing to use the word LORD LORD, so they translated it as LORD Jehovah. I can see no good reason for the translators to have used the word LORD instead of God’s correct name of Jehovah throughout the Old Testament.

When it got to the New Testament, which was written in Greek, God’s name was never used in the translation because it was not used in the original writings. First of all, God is not the name of God. God is who He is. And what is His name? God’s name is Yahweh, Yehovah and Jehovah whichever language you speak it in, but He only has one name.

Saying that “I AM WHO I AM” or “I AM THAT I AM” is not God’s name, it is what He is and who He is.

A closer study of Exodus 3:14 through verse 15 should make it clear just as God explained it to Moses. In order to see it, you must understand that the Bible Translators removed God’s name from the scriptures and substituted the word “LORD” for His name. Where the word “LORD” appears in scripture with all capital letters, it should be the English word “Jehovah” which is the translation of God’s name of YHWH, or Yehovah, or Yahweh.
